BEHIND THE
DESIGN: Take Me to TV Land
The
challenge presented to Sonia Lamba and her team was to create a story that
combined original animation and illustration with existing brand elements
and show clips to promote some 20 classic American television shows.
“Our approach focused on highlighting the personalities from each show
while creating an abstract, visual journey," Lamba explained. "The
spots are both sound bite-driven and use a graphic world to create the
concept of ‘Take Me to TV Land.’" To present that concept to TV Land's
executives, Lamba created a 5 ft. storyboard that showed a left-to-right
progression through four different eras ('50s, kitsch, the Wild West and
fantasy). "The board was created in such high resolution, "she says,
"that it allowed us to use it as an animation element, where we zoomed
in and out, went back and forth, all the while discovering different characters,
shows and environments."

Technocrats,
by Chuck Carey
When
my partners Dan Pappalardo, Mark Bohman and I decided to join forces in
our new strategic design and creative production company, we quickly realized
that technology would play a critical role. After all, it’s what
brings our work to life, fuels our business and creativity, and lets us
constantly refine our production process. Based on this common passion,
we focused on employing a methodical creative process, on building the
best team possible, but also, we wholly committed ourselves to embracing
any technological innovations that could benefit our unique processes and
our team members. Behind the scenes throughout our facility, a fibre
channel SAN allows us to keep a massive amount of media ready to use in
a shared environment, allowing any number of artists to access and share
components of a project without having to copy redundantly to local storage
on their workstations. This system has proven to be critical for
large-scale packaging assignments that can have hundreds of deliverables
and teams of up to ten artists working on a variety of elements.
On the creative side, this approach has allowed us to move away from a
“post-facility” model to more of a “studio” model, where all of the workstations
run a variety of applications, and the boundaries between animation, compositing
and editing are defined more by the artists’ skill sets than by hardware.
This system has made the difference on virtually every project we have
produced and delivered in the recent past. The project scope on our
comprehensive rebrand for TV Guide Channel, which required some 600 deliverables,
and the complete 720P HD graphics package and franchise design system we
recently delivered for ESPN’s SportsCenter are two projects that we would
have been very hard-pressed to deliver if we didn’t have our current system
in place. While technology is of critical importance internally,
evolution is also having many pronounced effects on the client-side of
our business. For example, within the in-house graphic departments
of our clients, the use of After Effects has become a common standard.
As these departments have grown, we have found the delivery of project
files to be a great complement to traditional tape-based delivery.
Our deliverables for ESPN constitute our company’s first large scale packaging
work in High-Definition, but we have actually been preparing ourselves
for this standard since our inception in 2001. Analyzing how production
technology performs at HD resolution, we have actually been pleasantly
surprised. In addressing the speed/performance issues, the increased
engineering requirements and the need to access render farms, in general
we have found the process of working in HD to be quite smooth. Today,
we’re finding that working with higher resolutions, different frame rates,
aspect ratios and progressive scan formats is really refreshing, allowing
us to revisit design and motion options that simply defy the capabilities
of NTSC. Down-conversions and center extractions for standard definition
still need to be factored in, but in our collective opinions, from a design
perspective, HD is a great new frontier in broadcast. For us, our
commitment to technology has paved the way for taking design to new levels
while extending our working relationships with our clients in important
ways. Our ongoing love affair with the latest technologies does require
some additional resources, but knowing that it elevates our artistry and
the on-air presence for each of our clients, our commitment is stronger
than ever.

Hollywood-based
strategic design and creative production company Troika Design Group created
four on-air promos for TV Land which involved concepting, scripting, design,
animation, editing, sound design and original music composition. The campaign
titled "Take Me to TV Land" premiered at the taping of the second annual
TV Land Awards: A Celebration of Classic TV, and made its debut during
the ceremony's initial telecast on March 17. The challenge presented to
Troika's project creative director/lead designer Sonia Lamba and her team
was to create a story that combined original animation and illustration

bite-driven and use graphics to create the concept of "Take Me to TV Land."
Troika's team watched numerous hours of footage from hundreds of episodes
to identify sound bites and clips that conveyed the story of the journey
to TV Land. The results of that process helped Lamba write scripts for
promos titled "Everything Television," "Kitsch," "Classics" and "Zany Comedy."
Additional credits go to Troika editors Bryan Hargraves and Luis Martos,
executive producer Mandy Martin, associate producer Steiner Kierce, designer/animator
Richard Eng, animator Jayson Whitmore and composer/sound designer Robert
