Over the past eight weeks, a multifaceted integrated campaign for Shell from JWT London named "Get the most out of every drop," has launched within many countries in Europe and Asia, aimed at demonstrating the benefits of Shell's new Fuel Save products. SHELL'S EURASIAN INTEGRATED CAMPAIGN FROM JWT LONDON FEATURES ARTISTIC BROADCAST SPOTS FROM STARDUST STUDIOS
Bibby and his crew, including live-action producer Richard Kaylor and directors of photography Bryan Newman ("Fuel Economy") and Neil Shapiro ("Performance"), shot their location footage using Sony F35 and RED One digital camera packages. "Even though we knew we were going to treat the footage heavily, the client really wanted the reality of the real world to come through," said Bibby. "As a result, we needed a wide variety of shots to tell the story, all related to the driving experience and the different situations drivers find themselves in. To capture that footage, we used a process trailer to get interiors of our talent driving through the city, cranes to get overhead shots, and helicopters to get sweeping vistas. Also, a Pursuit Systems rig using a Porsche Cayenne Turbo, which had a 15-foot techno on its roof, was very helpful in capturing our car-to-car footage."...

Member news from around the world
Bicoastal U.S. creative production company Stardust Studios just produced a spot titled "The Summer State of Mind" for DDB Chicago and Bud Lime. The goal of the spot, which was cut in thirty and fifteen second versions, was to show off all the aspects of summer crammed into a bottle. As such, the ad features a seamless blending of high-speed cinematography of Bud Light Lime pouring into a bottle with other live-action elements shown in silhouette, including young people dancing, playing volleyball and enjoying the sunset on a beach, all linked by compositing and CGI design. "The finished spot presents the best of several ideas we presented on how we thought we could make the bottle look cool," says Stardust creative director Brad Tucker, who directed. "We enjoy working in the type of collaborative environment this project represents, and feel that the quality of these finished spots is a direct result of our relationship with DDB's creative team and their openness to our ideas." Additional Stardust credits include Executive Producer Paul Abatemarco and Producer Alyssa Evans. The spots were edited by Stardust editors Tony Hall and Michael Merkwan. Agency credits go to Mark Gross, Chris Roe, Chuck Rachford and Will St. Clair. All spots feature the Santogold track "Lights Out," and final mixes are courtesy of Jimmy Hite of Santa Monica's Margarita Mix and Dave Gerbosi of Chicago's Another Country.

In cooperation with Japanese production company Kirameki, bicoastal production company Stardust Studios recently produced two HD spots for Tokyo's Electric Power Development (J-POWER) through the creative team at McCann Erickson Japan. The two HD :30 spots, entitled "Global" and "Environment," were directed by Stardust's founder and creative director Jake Banks and began airing in April in Japan. "The main focus of these spots was to show that J-POWER creates energy and makes everything possible for daily life," says Banks. "One was an environmental spot, and the other was a global spot that speaks to the industries, businesses, infrastructures and everything that the company powers." Although the original approach called for stock footage, Banks and the agency's creatives, including Isamu Nakamura, Takehiko Araki and Kenichi Horie, ultimately agreed on the benefits of capturing original live-action footage for the project. During one day of green screen shooting on a soundstage in Tokyo, Banks and director of photography Naoki Noda captured HD footage of actors and various animals. Artists at Stardust's Santa Monica studio then used Maya to create the natural habitats, the turbine and many other elements for both spots, and Adobe After Effects was used for visual effects and compositing. The spot was produced for Kirameki by Sachiko Tamaru, and executive produced for Stardust by Paul Abatemarco. Neil Tsai was Design Director, with Jody MacKinnon, Clara Park and Steven Poulsen producing for the studio.

Draftfcb recently approached Stardust about creating a spot to promote Pacific Gas & Electric’s charitable Climate Smart program, which enlists customers in a voluntary program aimed at offsetting greenhouse gas emissions through environmental conservation, restoration and protection projects. The spot, titled "Climate Smart,” was conceived by Draftfcb San Francisco's Colin McRae, Tony Vazquez, Justin Hargraves, Eric Molina and Dan Watson. It called for a time-lapse approach featuring imagery of a home that looks like an SUV, to complement the voiceover copy that explains that generating the energy a typical northern California home uses over the course of a year emits the same amount of greenhouse gas as an SUV, and urges customers to join the program to help the utility balance out its emissions. "Maya, After Effects, time-lapse footage and stock photography were all used to create the look of the spot," explains Stardust Creative Director Brad Tucker, who directed. "Clever compositing with lots of toggling key frames were the key to making the house feel like it’s really moving through the seasons.” Additional credits go to Stardust Exec Producer Paul Abatemarco, Producer Jody McKinnon, Editor Michael Merkwan, Art Director Jonathon Wu and Designer Gretchen Nash.

Stardust Studios recently produced a 1980s-themed live-action spot for RPA and Honda--a popular brand in this edition of the newsletter--titled “Van Stunts.” Directed by Stardust's Santa Monica-based Art Director Jonathan Wu, the spot is part of the agency’s "Respect the Van" theme for the Honda Odyssey mini-van. In this execution, the campaign embraces classic and kitschy vans as seen in 1980s US movies and TV shows, all designed to remind consumers that back in the day, vans were coolas evidenced by the old bumper sticker that used to say 'If this van’s rockin', don’t bother knockin'."....

There are plenty of creative baby-making ideas in The Kama Sutra, but The Kinda Sutra appeals to the confused kid in all of us. This documentary short chronicles childhood misunderstandings about where babies come from: The stork? The poop chute? Little pollywogs in the lake that swim into girls? In a series of interviews, adults admit to these misguided theories from their growing-up years, then each comical scenario plays out through animation. The real birds-and-bees info in the film comes from the mouths of well-informed babes. Watch the excerpt at www.thekindasutra.com.

..."After realizing that Jessica wanted a true representation of the original Karma Sutra and getting my hands on a copy, I found the illustrations to be truly beautiful, and things started flowing nicely," Reifki began. "It was daunting to recreate such ornate decorative elements because it required so much more time and effort, but it was definitely worth it. The book's paintings lack true perspective and therefore have a very flat quality, which I mirrored. The colours in a lot of the original art tend to be faded and drab so I took the liberty of making them a little more contemporary and vibrant by taking cues from the set created for the interviews....

Projects round-up
Fruit Loops. Animated characters made of thousands of individual fruits burst out of a soft drink bottle to engage in sporting activities in Stardust's spot for Nestle's Jamba Juice. Creative director Brad Tucker based the animation on data from a suitably energetic motion-capture shoot. "That data was then imported straight into Maya and applied to the 3D models," he says. "Getting the mocap data to blend between characters and controlling the particles in a way that made each transition believable and realistic was a challenge that required extensive R&D."

Bicoastal production company Stardust Studios recently produced a high-definition 3D animated spot for ad agency RPA and Honda. Directed by Stardust's Jonathon Wu, it broke last month. The spot was tied in to the theatrical release of Walt Disney Picture’s megahit High School Musical 3: Senior Year, and featured a visual motif familiar to all HS students: the yearbook. The spot, titled Yearbook, begins with a Wildcats-themed yearbook lying on a student's desk. After opening, the book's pages flip past, featuring photos of the movie's stars and handwritten notes and artsy doodles. When a Honda Odyssey appears and begins driving through some of the book's layouts, the illustrated doodles and other photographic elements come to life around the minivan, until more 3D-illustrated pages present the film's title. RPA's project team included EVP/chief creative officer David Smith, SVP/creative directors Joe Baratelli and Pat Mendelson, VP/associate creative director/art director Chuck Blackwell, copywriter Seth Prandini, SVP/executive producer Gary Paticoff, and senior producer Brian Donnellyall of whom could probably fit comfortably in an Odyssey while on their way to Century City to see Quantum of Solace. Additional Stardust credits go to creative director Brad Tucker, executive producer Paul Abatemarco, producer Josh Libitsky, editor Michael Merkwan, art director Jonathan Wu and designers Jonathan Wu and Ling Feng. Music by Hum, mixed at Margarita Mix.

Decades-dense
The American Telegram & Telegraph company might be shaking off the last of its 1880s dust; it recently teamed with a band from the double-oughts that borrows some of its sound from the 1980s and named itself for the decade after: AT&T and BBDO New York enlisted Scottish indie band 1990s for the "Beat City" spot - a computer-generated animation set to music to launch the new '80s-cum-retro-futuristic Sony Ericsson Walkman phone. Zune Goes Silent, Stays Pretty, Over Times Square
The Zune is getting mighty sexy ad-wise. (Not like Microsoft hasn't got the blow to cash -- er, the cash to blow.) The brand enlisted TAG, SF to build a silent spot for the 20-foot GeoffreyTron billboard in Times Square. The final product, Zune Tron, made use of work by Stardust, whose job it was to enliven the spot without use of actual sound. That's a tall order considering the product is an MP3 player, but it turned out damn pretty. It must have been gorgeous in person.

Fuelling up; Fuel TV taps into design royalty with signature series IDs
..."The creative direction from Fuel TV is always very open and fun to work on," says Stardust design director Neil Tsai. He worked on two signature ID projects this year; one with illustrator Nathan Reifke which aimed to "portray the universe as a giant machine" complete with interlocking gears and seamless transitions, and another with LA based-art/fashion collective Cardboard Robot. While the collaboration with Reifke was largely a matter of animating his illustrations, the Cardboard Robot piece integrated live action, graphics and 3D animation. "I felt very comfortable having creative discussions with Fuel every time, because they'll always listen and consider," says Tsai....

Stardust Studios and Revolver Film Company teamed up to create a unique new music video for Canadian band Sloan and the track I've Gotta Try from their eighth studio album Never Hear the End of It. Between creative director Jake Banks and design director Neil Tsai, the idea they presented suggested using an experimental illustration style to make the band members appear as pieces of sewn fabric inside of an imaginary world. Instead of creating the band in 3D and texturing them, the Stardust team shot and then textured them. Additional talents included EP Corey Cirillo, 3D animators Sam Sparks, Ash Wagers, Danny Koenig, David Glicksman & Asher Dudley, After Effects/3D Studio Max animator Daisuke Yamazaki, and effects artists Stephanie Tucker, Michael Plescia, Viviana Kim & Tiffany Germann. Post producer Lisa Pierce also weighed in.

They take coffee seriously in Finland. Stardust Studios' Jake Banks Directs New Music Video for Sloan's "I've Gotta Try"
...Between Banks and Neil Tsai, the design director for Stardust's Santa Monica studio who served as lead designer on "I've Gotta Try" and contributed greatly to the creative vision, the idea they presented suggested using an experimental illustration style to make the band members appear as pieces of sewn fabric inside of an imaginary world. Presidentti: the Coffee of Choice for Fairies, and Possibly Bjork
We've never seen anyone push coffee quite like this before, and we have to admit we dig it, even if we're not on 'shrooms. The magic was cultivated for Finland's Paulig Presidentti by Stardust Studios and Helsinski's SEK & GREY Oy. And bless their hearts, there's method to the madness. The notion was to convey a transcendent sensory experience while using the familiar Presidentti colour scheme and golden cup, which is something like a pimp goblet for caffeine. The slogan translates, "from the best coffees in the world." Mm. They could have done more with that. We would have shot for something more along the lines of, "from the ashes of the fresh-risen phoenix."

Nike Revives Rakim with Force Montage
Nike is less shoe purveyor than societal tastemaker. With symphonic float like a butterfly, sting like a bee undercurrents, their marketing work consistently defines our image of victory and strength-oriented aesthetics. They even turn breathing into athletic art. Nike's especially good at throwbacks and mash-ups. We're old-school Rakim fans so we're pretty taken with this web-only spot for Nike Force, entitled Force Heritage. The lovechild of R/GA and Stardust Studios, the spot showcases 25 years of Nike Force ad history with a Rakim-laced custom track from creative director Alex Moulton and composer Mike "G:Neu" Genato of Expansion Team. It takes a special kind of touch to make Air Forces appealing; we were never fans of the shoe. But it has lent itself to a lot of evolution and playful cultural design. We kind of wish the spot played more with that than with the usual sweaty basketball player mishmash. Nonetheless, the spot's delicious. Look at us, look at us, we're gushing like head-bopping break-dancing groupies back in grade school. We'd act on the feeling except at this point in our lives we'd probably break our tailbones. Better to just bob.

Hugo Boss Creates 3D World For New Cologne
We're not usually a fan of highly stylized commercials just for the sake of being highly stylized but this Callegari Berville Grey-created, Stardust-produced Hugo Boss Green campaign featuring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, is stylized for a reason and seems to catch our eye. Like Coke's Happiness Factory, the spot illustrates the world of beauty a cologne can create. Oh, sorry, we got caught up in all the hype there for a minute but a cologne doesn't just make you smell good. It's supposed to whisk you away to another world for a moment and make you feel special. That's what this campaign does in our opinion....

The Best Work You May Never See: Goodby Cleans Up For The California Coastal Commission
...The GSP team on the public service spot consisted of creative director Jeff Goodby, associate creative director/art director Paul Foulkes, associate creative director/copywriter Tyler Hampton and producer Michael Damiani. Executive creative director Jake Banks headed a Stardust coterie of talent that included executive producer Eileen Doherty, designer Kinda Akash, animator Sam Sparks and effects artist Mikey Plescia. "What I really like about the finished spot is its style; it's not quite animation, but it's not real either," observed GSP's Hampton. "It draws people in, and then it's quite eerie once this creature comes out. Overall it feels like something that will cut through the usual live-action things you see on television." GSP's Foulkes said that the agency turned to Stardust for this "miracle of birth gone wrong idea," based on past positive collaborations with the studio on end-graphics work for the Comcast campaign. He credited the Stardust ensemble with taking the "Non-Native Species" idea and running with it, resulting in an eloquent pro-environmental spot. Doherty said Stardust was "instantly attracted" to the project for its potential to do ecological good. "We knew right away that this piece had the chance to motivate people to make a positive difference for California's coastline."...

Thanks to everyone around the globe for sharing the news on the work of Goodby, Silverstein & Partners and Stardust Studios for the California Coastal Commission in the Public Service Announcement entitled "Non-Native Species" which you can view online here. A smaller MPEG version is available here. The goal of the PSA is to spur as many people as possible (last year, a record 52,000 volunteers showed up) to participate in the 22nd annual California Coastal Cleanup Day, scheduled for Sept. 16, from 9 a.m. to noon, at more than 700 locations around the state. Volunteers will clean trash and debris from 1,100 miles of the California coast, and another 1,000 miles along the inland shorelines of bays, creeks, rivers and lakes throughout California. Organizers of this year's event hope to build on the success of last year's, when an estimated 52,000 volunteers turned out to remove nearly 1 million pounds of debris from California's shorelines, marking the largest single event in terms of volunteers and pounds of debris in the cleanup's history....

Non-Native Species Not Extinct
Following up on its successful poster campaign for the California Coastal Commission in which hybrid creatures like the Spork Crab and Cig Egret are created from beach trash, San Francisco's Goodby Silverstein & Partners launched a integrated sophomore effort tied to the CCC's September 16 Clean-up Day. The campaign features outdoor and poster work as well as a pamphlet (an in-depth "field guide"), collectible postcards and this spot, "Non-Native Species," showing the birth of a Cig Egret. "We thought originally this would be a live action shot," says associate creative director Tyler Hampton. "[Stardust] had the idea of making it more stylized, and ultimately more interesting. We're really happy with the style of that, it feels really unique." After receiving positive feedback from children and teachers who placed the posters in their classrooms (and bring their classes on field trips for Clean-Up Day) Goodby decided to make a collection of six postcards for kids to swap, available along with the posters and in locations like surf and coffee shops. The extra elements of the pro bono campaign owe much to the momentum the original work got in awards shows (it won a Silver Lion at Cannes) and around the state, says ACD/Art Director Paul Foulkes. "Because it garnered so much positive attention, people have been willing to give a lot more to the cause this year; that applies to the vendors we're working with and community groups."...

Playing With Parameters by Beth Marchant, Editor-in-Chief
Stardust Studios is a relatively new effects shop with offices in Santa Monica and New York. We love what Stardust does and how they operate, rendering new forms with novel combinations of readily available gear and software. The studio’s 22 employees work to blend together film, video, fluid illustration, 3Dyou name itfor a range of editorial, live action, animation, visual effects, Web and print projects. All of it is done on Macs and PCs; no finishing on Flames here. The results are lush, fun and sometimes hypnotically surreal, like their short film Step Into Blue for Bombay Sapphire Gin, which won a World Gold BDA award. You’ve probably seen some of Stardust’s other work in action. Animated spots for Honda, Nissan, Nike and BMW and in-store videos for MAC Cosmetics have all grabbed attention in and out of the industry. With SIGGRAPH on our minds, we asked Stardust to create something special for our August cover. Art Director Neil Tsai, working with Executive Producer Eileen Doherty, used 3ds Max, Photoshop and Illustrator to produce two equally breathtaking yet different options for us. Inside, Stardust Design Director Brad Tucker goes in another direction and shows you how to take multi-pass renders of Cinema 4D elements and blend them in your After Effects comps (page 16)....

Filmed with the assistance of director of photography Neil Shapiro, Banks used a camera car, a helicopter, and locked- down mounts to capture the shots and get the angles necessary to match his storyboards.
